Six Base Kickball

Grade level: 2-8
Equipment: mats (or bases), ball, container (bin, box)
Game Description: Here’s a version of Kickball from David Bohlander, and I’m pretty sure it’s similar to a common version of Kickball that’s played in Germany. David said one of his foreign exchange students helped him modify his 6 base game to the German rules, and his students absolutely love it! There’s a unique rule to get runners out, a bit different from other versions of kickball. Almost everyone likes a good game of Kickball so try this one out if you’re looking for something new!

Massive 10 Second Tag

Grade level: 1-6
Equipment: none
Game Description: Tried a quick modification of Joel Sweetland’s ’10-second tag’ for a large group that I had. Wasn’t sure if it’d work but it went really good! Note: the cycles don’t have to be exactly 10 seconds (to keep the flow of the game going, you might add or subtract a few seconds here or there).

Oyster Shell

Grade level: 2-8
Equipment: 1 beanbag, floor lines (or cones)
Game Description: Here’s a fun little reacting and running competition that can basically be used for all ages. You don’t need much for equipment either. Split the group into 2 teams, they don’t even have to be even numbers. If you’ve got cones, you could try it outside too!

Large Group Wolf’s Den

Grade level: 1-6
Equipment: scarves (or pinnies)
Game Description: This is now my new favourite LARGE GROUP game. Depending on your space, it could work with 40, 50, maybe even 60 players. Not sure why I’ve never done it this way after all these years, but I will definitely more often use this when I have 2 or more classes doubled up. It could even be done outdoors in a large area and throw done cones to form a wolf’s den. I can personally vouch that I’ve had an awesome time with this game recently with different age groups doubled up. Hope you enjoy a ‘new’ version of an old favourite. And if it’s a completely new game for you, it’s normally played with the den along the width of the gym, instead of along the length (the set-up for a regular group of 15-30 players).

Beanbag Battle

Grade level: 1-6
Equipment: Cones, Hula hoops, beanbags, container or basket
Game Description: A stand-alone game, station idea, or field day activity. Teams face-off in a beanbag battle (Thanks to Jason Rosenberg for this game idea)!

Sprinters

Grade level: K-8
Equipment: Cones
Game Description: Who likes to sprint?! OK, probably not many people. But in this game, the participants might actually enjoy it (at least a little bit). That’s the hope. It’s a very easy idea: on every blow of the whistle, players will sprint and even try to catch the person in front of them. Then the groups rotate. Repeat, repeat, etc, etc.
